AP Literatura y Cultura Española
Course Description
The AP Literature and Culture course is designed to provide students with a learning experience equivalent to that of an introductory course in literature written in Spanish. The course introduces students to the formal study of a representative body of texts from Peninsular Spanish, Latin America and U.S. Hispanic literature. The course provides opportunities for students to demonstrate their proficiency across the three modes of communication (interpersonal, interpretive and presentational) and the five goal areas (communication, cultures, connections, comparisons and communities). The aims of the course are to provide students with ongoing and varied opportunities to further develop their proficiencies across the full range of language skills- with special attention to critical reading and analytical writing- and to encourage them to reflect on the many voices and cultures included in a rich and diverse body of literature written in Spanish.
Students will read some of the finest works in the literature history of Spain and Latin America. These works include a wide variety of genres from different literary periods and geographical areas, as outlined in the AP Spanish Literature and Culture Curriculum Framework. They will be studied in chronological order within a literary, historical, sociocultural and geopolitical context as applicable, and will address the six themes presented in the AP framework: Las sociedades en contacto, La construcción del género, El tiempo y el espacio, Las relaciones interpersonales, La dualidad del ser, and La creación literaria.
The class is taught entirely in Spanish and requires all students to use the target language at all times.
